Description

“Smoke Signals & Wagon Tracks” is a description of the local Indians that lived in the Northwest. The book tells the story of expansion by the white people into Indian Territory for settlement. Lewis & Clark contacted the Amerindians in the Snake River Region. The Hunt Party ate “puppy meat” outside of Eagle. The Hudson’s Bay Company trapped beaver and traded with the Indians, building Fort Boise, Fort Hall and other forts. Mountain men trapped beaver and married Indian women. Wagon trains rolled west on the Oregon Trail. Gold miners arrived by the thousands. Stage coaches carried passengers, gold, mail and stopped at "Old Fort Boise" on the Snake River. Struggles arose and the Indians went on the warpath attacking the wagons and miners. The cavalry was called in to protect the citizens and fight the Indians. Fort Boise military post and Boise City were established. As one Indian War was put down, another rose up. The Indians lost to the white man and were forced onto Federal reservations.
